Slow Juicers have rapidly become our best selling masticating juicers for a good reason. They are easier to live with than some other masticating juicer formats but they still give you the benefit of a more nutritious juice than any traditional centrifugal model can deliver. This example from Kuvings is a quality offering with a few distinguishing features that allow it to sit alongside the rest of the premium quality slow juicers in our range.
It was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to feed whole apples into a vertical slow juicer and Kuvings have won the race. They’ve done this by extending the vertical auger or screw that crushes the produce so that it has a tall ‘fin’ to slice the produce as it is fed into this huge feed chute. In our tests this worked really well and did speed up the juicing process. Speed of juicing has not been a huge issue for other slow juicers, because although the rotational speed of these machines is low, the huge augers process a lot of produce on each revolution. But everyone likes an increase in convenience and stuffing handfuls of produce at a time into a juicer without chopping it up gives just that. It is kind of satisfying having a bit less ingredient prep to do.
It is still better to feed leafy greens a little less enthusiastically – big handfuls of spinach for example can be difficult to push into the path of the auger. For a busy family that wants premium nutritional quality juice made up largely of fruits and hard veggies, the size of the chute cuts down most of the preparation.
One thing we really like about this juicer is the brush you get to help clean the screen. You can achieve the same results if you clean the steel mesh with a toothbrush but the Kuvings ‘cleaning tool’ is a really innovative gadget that fits snugly around the whole juice filter. Its stiff bristles make contact with the whole surface of the screen in a single twist of the wrist. Anything that makes clean up less of a chore gets our vote.
Like some of the other slow juicers in our range, it also comes with a ‘smoothie strainer’ with larger holes to make more pulpy fruit drinks or smoothies and a blank or ‘homogenising’ screen for making purees, sauces, nut butters and frozen fruit sorbets. Primarily though, you will probably mainly be using it as a juicer and the Kuvings Whole Juicer perfoms that task flawlessly, with a juice yield and quality comparable to any slow juicer on the market. If you don’t need these extra functions, save a little by choosing the non accessorized version.

(Kuvings, like Hurom, Omega and Tribest are a manufacturer with a well established track record stretching back several decades. Many other slow juicer brands originate from China, some of which also have directly copied features which are subject to investigation by the original designers and manufacturers. While production values may be steadily improving in China, the quality is not the same in our experience and failure to respect patents and intellectual property is still fairly common. Thinking ahead, we would advise our customers to think in terms of reliability, aftercare and the likelihood that parts will still be available in the long term when investing in a slow juicer. UK Juicers only deals with reputable and established brands.)
